What Is a Stacked Discount Calculator?

When several percentage discounts apply to the same purchase, each one is calculated from the price remaining after the previous reduction.

That means 20% off followed by another 10% off is not the same as 30% off once.

Formula

For two discounts:

Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount 1 ÷ 100) × (1 − Discount 2 ÷ 100)

For three discounts:

Final Price = Original Price × (1 − D1 ÷ 100) × (1 − D2 ÷ 100) × (1 − D3 ÷ 100)

Effective discount:

Effective Discount % = (1 − Final Price ÷ Original Price) × 100

Examples

A $200 item with 20% off followed by 10% off: $200 × 0.80 × 0.90 = $144. Total saving: $56. Effective discount: 28%. So 20% + 10% becomes an effective 28% reduction, not 30%.

Now try three percentage discounts on a $150 item: 25% off, then 10% off, then 5% off. $150 × 0.75 × 0.90 × 0.95 = $96.19 when rounded to the nearest cent. Total saving: $53.81. Effective discount: about 35.87%.

The advertised percentages add to 40%, but the true combined discount is lower because each reduction is applied to an already-reduced price.

For percentage-only discounts, order doesn’t affect the final result: $200 × 0.80 × 0.90 = $144 and $200 × 0.90 × 0.80 = $144.
